Defeating Lies and Vows with The Character Of Jesus By Travis Gibb 2/07/15

Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. ephesians 4:25

I stand and educated people often in regards to how to be succesful. I have meetings and inspire people. I put my heart into the community at large to build them up in hopes to see others succeed. I have a great track record in this. However, standing her in front of our church. I am humbled and nervous. Business, is easy but this is hard. This intimate. You see its standing here that i worry about what people think. I know people in this room have seen my struggles. They have seen my heart, we have cried together, we have laugh together. I have seen Jesus within them. In the way they speak to me i have felt the love of the father. However, i wonder do they see Jesus in me?  The truth, i know thats a lie. I know that those arent what i need to be worried about. I know what right in my heart. I know that people see me with love and i have blessed them just as much as the have bless me. However, often its easier to just believe the lie. The truth is harder pill to swallow. So, today i want to talk about the lies and vows we make. I want to talk about how they wage battle with us but as long as we continue to learn and grow from the character of christ that we can overcome and achieve even greater things. Then what we think.

City of Refuge is a blessing. We are blessed to be able to hear truths from one another. We are blessed by this kingdom. This kingdom that is City of Refuge,. I call this place home and the people within it family.  I am so blessed to be in this kingdom with each and everyone on of you. I am blessed that my spirit and your spirit found each other and then when the communicated that had this great awesome talk. They bonded and found something that binds them together. Its truly a blessing.
However, with that  there is always line. This invisible set of rules that we have placed in our lives due to lies and vows we have made. They are subtle lies that even goven us know as we sit in this room. If you have ever thought any of the following.

  • Why is She or He talking to me?
  • I am shocked that they are here.
  • Is it a hoilday? We only see that family on hoildays
  • I really hope that one of my friends gets my in the secret santa
  • We dont realate he is a good guy but we dont relate
  • No one here understand my pain

Some of these are more complicated and seem like a good idea at the time. Others are ways to protect our hearts or our familys. These vows can be simple as stating
-I dont need help. I always pull through because god is with me (spoiler you need help.)
-Once i get my tax return. I can fix everything

-I will never be like my parents.

– One day he or she will love me

– Once the baby is born. We can get our relationship back inline.

These vows hold us back from going to that next level. Its these little lies that we that keeps us from being better stewards of christ is by the lies and believing of the lies that we tell ourselves and the vows and understanding of these actions. We are always attempting to live up to rightousness. However, our words sometimes betray us. Words are extremly powerful. God created the universe with but a word and we as his children are asked to speak and worship him with words.  The sermon on the mound speaks about these vows in great detail.

Read Verse
Matthew 5 – 33- 37

33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’ 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.[g]

An oath was a solemn promise someone made to indicate that they were telling the truth. The story of the Old Testament is full of examples—oaths are mentioned almost 200 times! This practice didn’t begin with the law. It already existed in Abraham’s day, over 500 years before Moses.

But the law picks us the practice and talks about the significance of making an oath. The OT teaches that a person following God, an honest person, will fulfill their promises. You will be able to rely on him doing what he said he would do.

But not everyone tells the truth. And more particularly, people tend to make false promises”—easily made and easily broken. Because of that we sometimes don’t believe people when they say they will do something.

But if they swear that they will do it, that usually means something more to us. “I will do it” vs. “I swear I will do it.” It seems more reliable, more believable. At least they seem to know that they are making a promise.

However, the reality of this is i believe we all have the best intentions of furfilling that promise but we get busy, or we forget or maybe it was just harder then we thought.
So, we are all are living in this kindgom and its great but what we fail to acknowledge these lies in our lives is the the enemy comes in slowly. He comes in as we start believing the lies we say to each other or we stop having faith in each other.
The reason we do this is because of the sad fact we all lie!!!!
Yes, all of us lie.
Every, single one of us. I know you may in your heart be like. No, i am honest man or women. I dont lie. I promise you do. We tend to make rules to hide behind our lies and to make the lie maybe bend to achieve our truth.
We use the words to bend the truth and we build these lies and hide behind them. Anything, from We lie to mask our insecurities.

  1. Power: a longing for influence or recognition
  2. Control: a longing to have everything go according to my plan
  3. Comfort: a longing for pleasure and security
  4. Approval: a longing to be accepted or desired

The way we lie

  • we exaggerate the truth (never clean your room, never flush toilet.)
  • we brushes people with the truth (speak truth and love. We are right and you need to hear it.)
  • we withhold the truth (we dont want to hurt there feelings or what they dont know wont hurt them. Its not you its me? )
  • Everytime, you speak truth you are not perfectly living. This is one of the reasons we done want to speak tthe truth.

So, alright we all lie. We live under false walls and vows. To make it worse we look at the world and we have corporations tellings us how to eat, think or act. It seems pretty hopeless because there are so many walls and barriers. What i want to show you tonight is. How, Jesus is already breaking through the walls of these lies. How. he is speaking to his people and we are achieving great things.
I believe strongly that this church and society is in a season of unification. I believe that there are people who will continue to stay the status quo and there are people who will break the model.  You see, the world continues to create system and programs to solve the world problems that no longer work. We rebel against healthcare, We rebel about how we feed our poor, We rebel against should we or should we not vaicinate, We rebel against how we feed ourselves. We rebel about how we spend our money. Within the Christian Circle even rebel on how we worship, How we look and speak, how we partner and even how we interpret the word.
We create programs to help these issues and we arent happy with their results.
We speak the words

  • This system is flawed
  • This system doesnt achieve our goals
  • They dont address the problem

There are thousands of books and movies on the subject that addresses these issues from Super Size Me to Toxic Charities. I find that we struggle with finding a commonality to address our issues and because of that we fail to truly embrace our callings.
We sit ideally by creating new programs, missions and churches to address the needs of gods people. We are in age where communication to the masses have never been better and yet we feel that we make just as much of an impact by click a like button as we do by volunteering.
I believe that by acknowledged our lack of fully partnering with Christ we can start to unifiy and achieve great things for the kingdom. With these greater achivements we can seperate ourseleves from lies and vows that are false truths in our life.
The first way to do this is by looking at how we partner with Christ. We tend to say things like my strength only comes from Jesus. Or I only respond when i hear Gods voice. These are great and truth things. However, one of the things that we dont acknowledge is that our reflection of the integrity of christ is what carries us through most situations.
Let me read the definition of intergity
(READ INTEGRITY DEFINITION)
in·teg·ri·ty

inˈteɡrədē/

noun

  1. 1.
  2. the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness.
  1. 2. the state of being whole and undivided.

To take that definition a bit further i break it down into a few key points and give you a better understanding of Integrity. I also want to state that it is my belief that Integrity builds character not the other way around.

  1. Integrity of Charecter is not determined by circumstance
    1. Both Poor and Rich can have Integrity
    2. People born in the same house or same situation can
    3. The 12 and judas.)
  2. Integrity of Charecter is not based on Credentials.
    1. No number of titles, degrees, offices, designations, awards, licenses or other credentials can substitute the influnce of ones charecter. (Guandi, Martin Luther, Nelson Mendal.)
  1. Integrity or Charecter is not to be confused with Reputation
    1. Reputation can be made in a moment but character is built over a lifetime
    2. Reputation is defined by circumstance the truth is your belief determines your character
    3. Reputation makes you rich or poor. Character makes you happy or miserable
    4. Reputation is what men say about you on your tombstone, character is what the angels say about before the throne of god.
  2. Integrity wants Integrity
    1. People who believe themselves to have integrity want to be connect to people who share those same core values.
  3. Integrity or your charecter will defines your value

“According to Scripture, virtually everything that truly qualifies a person for leadership is directly related to character. It’s not about style, status, personal charisma, clout, or worldly measurements of success. Integrity is the main issue that makes the difference between a good leader and a bad one.”  ~ John MacArthur

Jesus was a man of the utmost integrity and charecter. He keep to his word and values in everything he did. He was not defined by reputation, credentials or circumstances. He allowed others to watch his works and make their declarations. He respond to people with his good works.
I believe that Jesus Christ Integrity is the largest draw to christ. His value are un-questioned by any who have studies his walk. I believe that churches are defined by attempting attempting to live by his works of Integrity rather than by living by his strength in our weakness.
However, for Christ to do his good works he partnered with people to allow them to achieve the goal.
Christ had 37 recorded Miracles in the bible. (Debatable up to 42.) We know since his death there has been countless more and John himself stated”Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.” (John 21:25, NIV)
Of those works depending on your viewpoint 30 of those miracles involved other people in various levels of partnership from the Virgin Birth, Teach To Fish, Rubbing Mud on Eyes to curing blindness, Feeding the 4000. All of these involved people and partnership. God allows us to take part and be pro-active even more so after the resurrection. His disciples started forming churches gathering like minded people and we read the leaders to these churches. These letters acknowledge that even during the start things were different in each churches but they used on the teaching and integrity of Jesus’s stories to unity people. These letters showcase the disiples making recommendations and help them better understand Jesus works and teachings.
He tooks us the people who lie, who build vows and people who just flat out refuse to work together for political views, the way feel about voting issues or human rights. It took us all and said you guys are on my team. That means i am on the team with the crazy hobo screaming repent or die. I am on the team with kirk cameron and his unqiue views on the christianity. Like it or not we need to partner and view gods charecters are a basis of how it can be done.
I look at that task and become overwhelmed. Much like was with speaking tonight. How can i get us all on the same path. How, can i walk this tough road. Infact, how do we even know that god is with us as we move foward in this new pardigm. Its gonna take more then pray to get us to accept that truth to not be use against us and to accept that we can unite and see great results.
I want to give you some ideas to take away and think about how the world is responding to the changes in our world. I want to show you gods love in the way society as we are changing so fast that something are going back to the word.

  1. Value – Jesus saw the value in people. As a society we are now deciding as whole who has value. We do this by using Kickstarter and GoFund Me’s. The days of give our money away blindly is quickly going away.
  2. Teaching- Jesus saw to teach his people. As a society we are constantly wanting to learn. We have seen one of the largest growth in non-profits in the education field. We are reducing the cost of education and allowing people to learn on there own time. Even if you dont agree with our president he is making great striders in attempting to make schools more affordable.
  3. Love – Jesus loved his people. Society is for the first time in the last 50 years. Is starting to love themselves mostly by unique people who have never farmed in there life now taking up the reigns to eat and become healthier. We are seeing countless youth going back to core values and learning skills that the world says isnt necessary.
  4. Truth – Jesus spoke the truth and that can now be denied. Regardlress of the changes in our world. The things that go against the teachings in the bible. You can take bibles our of schools and not say a prayer at a baseball game. However, when it matters when you need something stronger then mans words. We still need god. Look at  courts still swearing on bibles. look at our president still swearing in on a bible

To Wrap things up. The Integrity of Jesus is one of the most captiving parts of his story. I believe that is those values that allows us to have a basic natural trust with fellow christians. If we trust that we will walk Jesus line of integrity we have nothing to fear about partnership. We can tell the truth even when it hurts and know that it comes from love. We can become better people and help each other achive greater thing.
We need to start taking part on this in a small scale. If there is someone near you that you feel would not be someone you would want to spend time with then. I encourge you to stop holding back and speak truths and bless one another. If you are struggling and need help. I encourage you to be honest and address that concern. If you live by Jesus charecter you will see great success and great love.
i encourage you to not just share with those who are closest to you but share with someone new. Become part of the community of the world. We are all gods children. So i beg you to ……….

1) Share the word.
2) Share life events.
3) Share God stories.
4) Share life.
5) Inspire and train.
6) Collaborate.
7) build something great and better.

The more we allow the charecter of jesus in our hearts the more we ill reflect his truths. His truths will bring greatness.
